Council votes to pursue watersports complex but project stymied by change of government

On 13 October six councillors voted to submit the watersports park proposal to an independent planning panel, provided the cost of doing so is met by the state government. However, on 15 November, during a tour of the Geelong region, the new Labor state premier Steve Bracks said that his government would not provide the $240,000 required by Geelong council to pursue the planning process.

While the new government does not share the Coalition's enthusiasm for the watersports complex, Mr Bracks has refused to write the project off forever, merely saying that it is not on the new government's agenda. Local Labor members Elaine Carbines, Ian Trezise and Peter Loney are opposed to the project and have said that the project is 'dead in the water' following Labor's election victory.
